Cattus Island

Cattus Island is part of the Ocean County Parks System and it is conservation area dedicated nature and education.

Cattus Island is a peninsula with almost 500 acres of freshwater streams, saltwater marshes and over 300 plant species that provide food and shelter to birds, mammals, fish and a wonderful assortment of minute creatures adjacent to Silver Bay.

Seasonal activities are plentiful; you can cross country ski in the winter, osprey watch in the spring, summer brings seining to the Island's bay shore, and see spectacular foliage in the fall.

Visitors will enjoy the over 6 miles of marked nature trails. One trail is a winding boardwalk, just wide enough for two people to pass one another. It comes to an abrupt end exposing the beauty of Cattus Island and Silver Bay.

Bicycling is restricted to the 2 mile unpaved fire road. If you're quiet you may see deer along the road.

Visit the Cooper Environmental Center where you can see a collection of snakes and reptiles. Children will enjoy the Junior Naturalist program's hands-on activities.

The park is open to the public all year from 8:00 am to sunset and is primarily a pedestrian facility. The Center is open 9:00 am to 5:00 PM during the summer and 10:00 am to 4:00 PM during the winter. These hours are subject to change so call ahead to verify the times.

Groups are welcome but must pre-register in advance of their visit. Naturalist- guided tours are encouraged for all groups. Facilities include an education site, handicap-accessible picnic area, playground, and restrooms.

If you enjoy bird watching, fishing, crabbing, bicycling or just the beauties of nature then you will enjoy Cattus Island.
